Italy is one of the oldest and most important winegrowing countries in the world. The acreage has been reduced in recent decades in favor of quality to approximately 800,000 hectares. Due to the characteristic shape of the country and the differences in climate and soil conditions, internationally known species such as Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah and Chardonnay mature under the Mediterranean sun. However, Italian winemakers have in the past rediscovered native, indigenous grape varieties for quality winegrowing. The winegrowers concentrate on these grape varieties on a significant increase in quality with decreasing yields per hectare. The winemakers achieved particular success, among others, in the red grape varieties Sangiovese, Nebbiolo, Corvina and Barbera. From these grape varieties, which are grown in the north and in Tuscany, known premium wines such as Barolo, Barberesco, Brunello, Chianti Montepulciano and Amarone are pressed. Increasingly, the grape varieties of the South such as Negroamaro, Aglianico, Primitivo and Nero d'Avola gain in importance.

Although in Italy almost as much white wine as red wine is grown, the really big wines are almost without exception red. Italian red wine is known for its intense, full-bodied taste and is considered by many wine connoisseurs to be the best red wine in the world. Among the best known varieties are the Chianti, Bardolino, Sangiovese, Montepulciano and Valpolicella. The Barolo, once called the 'wine of the kings', is still considered a delicious holiday wine today.
